What is NLP?

Neuro-Linguistic Programming™ in a nutshell!

Neuro-Linguistic Programming™ (NLP™) isn't the easiest thing to describe in a couple of sentences! It is a behavioral system, defined as "the study of the structure of subjective experience".

NLP™ was co-created by John Grinder (linguist) and Richard Bandler (mathematics and gestalt therapy) in the '70s through the observation and study of gestalt therapist Fritz Perls, family systems therapist Virginia Satir and psychiatrist Milton H. Erickson. Taking what they learnt from them, they created models for how a person’s mind, language, and patterns of thinking combine to create what that person perceives as reality.

NLP™ is based on behaviour and observation for uncovering useful and redundant life patterns of behaviour (programming). Once those patterns are identified, it is possible to go about strengthening what works and changing what doesn't. NLP™ works with the structure of how people hold their realities in place.

NLP™ is best described as a collection of tools and techniques for enhancing personal development. Because of it's roots, NLP™ contains tools from both psychiatry and hypnosis.
