We've put this page together to help dispel many of the myths surrounding this technique. We hope you find it useful.
Q: What is hypnosis and what does it feel like?
A: It is a natural state, (half way between being awake and asleep)
but induced on demand. People feel very relaxed, comfortable and calm.
Q: Am I conscious and in control?
A: Absolutely. It is actually a heightened state of awareness, contrary
to popular belief. You are aware of everything and you can choose
to resist any suggestion.
Q: How is it different to stage hypnotism?
A: Stage hypnotism is based on expectation and participation. You
are no more "under their control" than you would be in a normal fully
conscious state. However the hypnotist would like everyone to believe
that he or she has power over their volunteers as it makes great entertainment.
Q: Can I "get stuck" in hypnosis?
A: Absolutely not! It is a natural state for you to be in.
Q: If the hypnotist doesn't bring me out of hypnosis what
can happen?
A: One of two things will happen. You'll either come around in your
own time or you'll start snoring because you'll be asleep!
Q: Why does the hypnotist say "sleep" if I'm not actually
asleep?
A: This is a throw-back to when people practiced hypnosis a long time
ago.
Did you know the word hypnosis is derived from the Greek word "Hypno", meaning sleep? (It's actually not a great word to describe it and only confuses people!) When a hypnotist asks you to sleep, he just means a state of calm, peaceful relaxation.
